Obituary

James E. Cosby, Jr., of Wabash, Indiana, passed away on October 26, 2026, in Noblesville, Indiana, following a courageous battle with cancer. A proud Army veteran, dedicated public servant, and devoted father and grandfather, Jim lived a life defined by service, leadership, and a genuine appreciation for people and his community.

Known for his towering 6-foot-4 frame, warm smile, and infectious laugh, Jim was a memorable presence wherever he went. He loved good conversation and storytelling and had a special way of connecting with people of all ages. Children, many of whom knew him as "Daddy Jim," were especially drawn to his humor and easygoing nature. Those who knew him well will remember his sharp mind, quick wit, and the genuine interest he took in others.

Born and raised in Madison, Indiana, Jim attended Madison Consolidated High School, where he excelled both academically and athletically, particularly in basketball. He continued his basketball career at Franklin College, carrying his competitive spirit and love of sports throughout his life.

A proud veteran of the United States Army, Jim built a career rooted in dedication and service. He served as head of the laboratory at Wabash County Hospital and later at Marion General Hospital. He went on to serve as supervisor of the Wabash Wastewater Treatment Plant and was later on staff at White's Institute in Wabash. For more than two decades, he served as a councilman-at-large on the Wabash City-County Council, working to bring people together in support of Wabash residents and earning respect as a dedicated voice in local government.

Outside of his career and public service, Jim enjoyed fishing, music, and sports, interests that remained lifelong passions. He was an avid fan of singer-songwriter Jim Croce and blues legend Buddy Guy and enjoyed playing guitar in his spare time. He passed along his love of Jim Croce's music to his children, just as he shared his steadfast loyalty to the Chicago Cubs, Indiana Pacers, and Indianapolis Colts. Family members treasure memories of watching games together and attending Pacers and Colts games with him over the years.

Jim took great pride in his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and found joy in following their lives and accomplishments. His nephew Brian also held a special place in his heart and was cherished alongside his children and grandchildren. The family he leaves behind was a lasting source of pride throughout his life.

Jim married Mary Lou Gibson in 1963, and together they raised their family. He also attended Zion Lutheran Church in Wabash.

Jim is survived by his six children, James E. Cosby III (Connie), Andre Cosby, Chris Cosby (Cindi), MaryAnn Cosby Abramson (Dustin), Matthew Cosby, and Taylor Mettler; his grandchildren, Malcolm Wells, Kaedyn Day, Jazen Cosby, Cyan Cosby, Honor Cosby, Drej Cosby, Mary "Malyka" Abramson, Keith Abramson, Maya Abramson, and Malia Warner; and his great-grandchildren, Anya, Ahyan, and Amaya. He is also survived by his brothers, Steven "Bill" Cosby, Thomas "Tony" Cosby, Jeffery Cosby, and Marvin Cosby; his sister, Faye Cosby Allen; his beloved nephew, Brian; and many cherished nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James E. Cosby, Sr., and Hazel L. Watson Cosby; his sisters, Bonita "Bonnie" Malone and Vanessa Tyree; his brother, Kenneth "Kenny" Cosby; and Mary Lou Gibson Cosby, with whom he shared many years and a family they deeply loved.

Jim leaves behind a lengthy legacy of service and leadership in the Wabash community and a foundation of love, pride, and family for his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

He will be remembered for his intellect, wide smile, and the countless conversations, stories, and memories he shared with family and friends. His memory lives on in the family he loved, the community he served, and the many lives he touched along the way.
