Harold Richard O'Connor, age 84, of Madison, Indiana, and the son of the late Ignatius Warren and Patricia Yetive (Hall) O'Connor, was born on December 14, 1941, in Chicago, Illinois. During his childhood, his family relocated to Bicknell, Indiana, near Vincennes, where he graduated from Bicknell High School with the Class of 1959. On January 11, 1961, he enlisted in the United States Navy and faithfully served our country for four years until he was honorably discharged on January 19, 1965. Harold married Suzanne C. Snider and they were blessed with two children, Alanna and Alan. For thirty years, Harold drove an Indianapolis City Bus until he retired in 1995.
In 1985, Harold met his companion, Ellen M. Hedrick and they enjoyed 27 wonderful years together until her passing. In 2012, Harold found love again when he met Mary R. Davidson. For the last fifteen years, they built a life filled with joy, companionship, and many cherished memories with one another, her children, and grandchildren. Harold was a faithful believer in Jesus Christ and attended North Madison Christian Church for many years. In his spare time, he enjoyed photography, fishing, bowling, camping, being involved with Little League, and spending time with his family. He was a talented artist who enjoyed painting and took great pride in framing many of his own pieces. Harold never met a stranger and enjoyed getting to know people wherever he went. Mr. O'Connor passed away on Monday, June 22, 2026 at his residence in Madison, with his loving family by his side.
His life will be cherished by his companion of fifteen years, Mary Davidson of Madison; his children: Alanna O'Connor Strodtbeck of Indianapolis, Indiana, and Alan Richard O'Connor of Dallas, Texas, Scott Davidson and his wife, Laura of Madison, Chuck Davidson and his wife, Renee Volak of Madison, New Jersey, and Michael Davidson of Mishawaka, Indiana; his grandchildren: Bryan (Kathleen), Kelsi, Brycen, Nicholas, Jack, Sophia, Lucy, Kelby (Brandon), and Brayden;; and his great grandchildren: Haylen, Gracelyn, Axel, Margot, Brylee and Lakynn. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother: Albert Ignatius O'Connor; his companion, Ellen M. Hedrick who passed away on April 30, 2012; and his step-son: William "Bill" M. Hedrick.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 PM, Friday, June 26, 2026 at the Welty Family Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Lytle Chapel, 117 Holt Drive, Madison, with interment to follow in Fairmount Cemetery in Madison. Friends and family may visit at Welty Family Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Lytle Chapel from 12:00 PM noon until the time of the service on Friday.
The United States Navy and the Major Samuel Woodfill Post #9, American Legion, Madison will conduct military honors.
The family requests memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society. Contributions may be made at the Welty Family Funeral Home or below.
